Planning For Your DIY Porch Enclosure Project

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’ve encountered supply chain issues. Patience has run thin for many people who are trying to complete home projects and have other work done that involves the construction or assembling of products. And while the height of the pandemic is apparently behind us, the COVID variants, monkeypox, and various other viruses that have cropped up continue to debilitate 3rd party resources that the United States relies on, in order to produce their goods.

Supply chain realities

Home building materials are not the only products that are experiencing the continued slow down. The bullet-point list below is a sample of first-hand supply chain problems that we are facing in our personal lives.

  • Pottery Barn, Gabberts, Yard Bird, and Design Within Reach are averaging 4-8 months for custom-built desks, chairs, and couches.
  • Ford Motors took pre-orders for the Mustang Mach E SUV during the fall of 2021. Those orders are just being scheduled for production now. Once the cars are done, they’ll take another 3-5 weeks just to get on a train or truck to get to their destination.
  • New home construction companies have been waiting on cabinet installation kits for more than 10 months. When they get them, they are beaten up, broken, and need replacement parts.
  • Lighting stores have waited more than 6 months to receive specialty light bulbs for installation in new developments and large contracts.
  • Semiconductors are in short demand as they are made in overseas Asian countries which continue to be decimated with health crises, not only weakening their labor force but killing it off.
  • Aluminum and other metals are being produced at half the rate.
  • Plastics are in high demand.
  • Food products continue to be a problem as much as the people and processes required to properly inspect, handle and pack them.
  • Baby diapers… obviously.

Where do we stand?

There were hopes that supply chain issues would start to abate in the first half of 2022 as the effects of the pandemic became contained in more countries. But other events, such as the war in Ukraine, have added new bottlenecks. And with lockdowns in Shanghai and other key cities across China, pandemic-driven snags are hurting supply chains again. Current estimates are looking at late 2023 before we see any relief.

How to plan for your DIY Porch Enclosure Project

Plan ahead. We want to make sure that you are able to complete the project that you have in mind. Customers of American Screens ask regularly when their products will be shipped. The product we sell is custom-made from American companies like Larson, Porch Conversion, and Genius Screens. The standard lead time for these products assuming all is running smoothly is 5-8 weeks after we approve your order. Shipping time is an extra calculated time once we know what that is. So waiting until next spring of 2023 to order your materials for that spring’s project could delay your project due to the high volume of orders during that time and the possible continued effects of supply chain issues.

The most popular home DIY project out there is porch build-outs, porch enclosures, or outdoor living spaces. A more popular option this year has been to create expansive views on a large enclosed porch area with Scenix Screens. While we are not the only re-seller of custom-built products from some of these companies, we do offer the same turnaround times and challenges as your other options. We are all sourcing from the same manufacturers. Luckily, your build-to-order windows, screens, and doors are made in the USA in North Carolina and Ohio.

So, if you’re thinking about ordering for your fall 2022 project you might be behind the 8-ball. That is more likely a winter 2022/2023 project. We recommended putting your plans in motion right now so that spring projects have a high success rate of being completed.

Porch Windows/Screens

One way to enclose your porch with American Screens USA is the use memory vinyl windows and doors. These windows will transform a standard screen porch, sunroom, covered patio, or covered deck, into a multi-season room, that you will be able to enjoy for most of the year. These lightweight but heavy-duty vinyl windows and doors are uniquely designed and custom-sized to fit existing openings without expensive reframing, making it easy to enclose your outdoor spaces.

Open, they let the breeze in, with an incredible 75% ventilation. Closed, they provide protection from rain, snow, wind, bugs, dust, and the summer sun. Your porch will become an extension of your home or cabin that can be occupied nearly year-round.

Scenix Retractable Screens

  • The dual sash panels are uniquely designed to optimize natural airflow and comfort.
Easy to operate, the retractable panels simply disappear when closed.
  • Easy-to-order and easy-to-install. It’s the perfect weekend DIY project.
Increase your property value with the addition of a Scenix™ porch.
  • Four colors are available in white, brown, sandstone, and black.

Large Format Powered Garage Screens

You might be man’s man… maybe you spend all of your time in the garage and are working on your ideas for your man cave. Whether you live in the midwest, west coast, east coast, or down south, you are subject to bugs, animals, debris, dirt, leaves, and wind coming into your garage.

The time has never been better to ventilate your garage with a large motorized screen. Putting your custom order together now will probably ensure that you can have it installed by the winter season. You can also use large, drop-down screens for wide areas on large porches or industrial openings on coastal homes, event centers, breweries, distilleries, warehouses, and more.

Do not wait to start your DIY Project

While you are considering all the aspects of building your home renovation project, make sure to pick a partner that specializes in the production of the windows and doors that you are looking for. We’ll be realistic about deadlines and our manufacturing partners’ timelines. If you are adding to your home, you may also want to consider other local requirements such as a building permit. It’s possible your city or county will require you to have these in order to commence your project. Get those in order first.
